At Fox & Moon Woodworks, we believe the objects we use every day deserve the same care and consideration as the things we treasure. The Character of Wood
Every piece begins with the selection of materials.
We work with a variety of domestic and exotic hardwoods, each chosen for its color, grain, and figure. From the intricate figuring of amboyna burl to the rich tones of desert ironwood and the striking contrast of ebony, every species brings something unique to the finished piece.
Even within the same species, no two pieces share precisely the same appearance. Rather than conceal these differences, we allow them to guide the design.
The Art of Segmentation
Some of our most distinctive writing instruments begin not with a single piece of wood, but with many.
Segmented woodworking involves carefully cutting, arranging, and joining contrasting woods to create intricate patterns and compositions. Each component must be prepared with precision before the assembled blank can be shaped on the lathe.
The resulting patterns bring geometric design into conversation with the natural grain of the wood. It is a process that rewards patience, attention to detail, and a willingness to explore new possibilities.
Shaped with Care
Each writing instrument is individually turned, shaped, sanded, and finished in our workshop.
Particular attention is given to the proportions of the pen, the transitions between materials, and the quality of the finished surface. Our goal is to create instruments that feel as considered in the hand as they appear to the eye.
Careful surface preparation and polishing reveal the depth of the wood while creating a surface that invites handling and use. Only after the woodworking is complete is each instrument assembled with its carefully selected writing components.
Beyond the Writing Instrument
Our carved wooden pen cases and writing accessories complement the instruments they accompany. Combining precision machining with careful hand finishing, these pieces feature detailed relief carving, considered proportions, and the warmth of fine hardwoods.
